B2B Cold Email Templates That Get Replies

Five B2B cold email templates for startup founders, plus the follow-up sequence and rules behind a 58% open rate and 11% reply rate.

Most cold emails fail for the same reasons. Too long, too much about the sender, and no clear reason to reply.

For Consider, a seed-stage SaaS platform selling to VC firms, we ran personalized outreach that averaged a 58% open rate and an 11% reply rate, and booked 2 qualified demos a day. Here are the templates and rules behind it. Swap in your own details.

The Rules First

  • Under 100 words. If it scrolls, it's too long.
  • Open with them, not you. Their problem, their company, their trigger.
  • One ask. A short call or a yes/no question.
  • Plain text. No images, no heavy formatting.
  • Follow up. Most replies come after the first email.

Template 1: The Trigger Email

Subject: {Trigger} at {Company}

Hi {First name},

Saw {Company} just {raised / hired a VP of X / launched Y}. Usually that's when {specific problem} starts to bite.

We help {ICP} {outcome} without {common pain}. {Customer} {result}.

Worth a 20-minute call next week?

Template 2: The Problem Question

Subject: Quick question about {problem}

Hi {First name},

How is {Company} handling {specific problem} today?

Most {job titles} we talk to are {current workaround}, which costs them {time / money / deals}.

We built {product} to fix that. Open to seeing how it works?

Template 3: The Proof Email

Subject: How {Similar company} {achieved result}

Hi {First name},

{Similar company} was dealing with {problem}. In {timeframe}, they {specific result}.

Given {Company}'s {similar situation}, I thought it might be relevant. Happy to share how they did it.

Template 4: The Value-First Email

Subject: {Resource} for {their team}

Hi {First name},

We put together {template / benchmark / guide} on {topic}. Thought it might help as {Company} {current goal}.

Here it is: {link}. No ask. If it's useful, I'd love to hear what you think.

Template 5: The Breakup Email

Subject: Close the loop?

Hi {First name},

I've reached out a few times about {problem}. If it's not a priority right now, no problem. I'll stop here.

If it is, just reply "yes" and I'll send a couple of times.

A Simple Sequence

  1. Day 1: Template 1 or 2.
  2. Day 4: Template 4 (value first, no ask).
  3. Day 8: Template 3 (proof).
  4. Day 14: Template 5 (breakup).

Before You Hit Send

  • Set up SPF, DKIM, and DMARC, and warm up new sending domains.
  • Send in batches of 20 to 50 and test one change at a time.
  • Track reply rate and meetings booked, not just opens.
